How to get to Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University is a state-assisted institution in
Norfolk, Virginia, a historic metropolitan and historic area with
a population of approximately 1.4 million. Located 200 miles south
of Washington, D.C., Old Dominion University is within minutes of
the world's largest Naval Base, the largest East Coast seaport and

Norfolk is accessible by major highways from all four directions:
- From the North:
Take I-95 south to Richmond. Exit on I-64 East
toward Norfolk-Virginia Beach. Take the Hampton-Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Exit
I-64 on any Norfolk exit.
- From the West:
Take Route 460 or Route 58 East. Continue until
entering I-264 into Portsmouth. Take either the Downtown or Midtown tunnels
into Norfolk.
- From the East:
Take Route 44 (The Norfolk-Virginia Beach Expressway)
to I-264 directly into Norfolk.
- From the South:
Take Highway 17 North to Dominion Boulevard

HOV lanes -- A marked lane on Interstate 64 and Route 44 will
be designated for vehicles with two or more passengers during morning and
afternoon rush times. Lanes are open to all traffic the remainder of the

Virginia Department of
Transportation office at (757) 494-2451.
Carpooling --
Hampton Roads Regional Transit coordinates
those wishing to carpool by putting drivers who live in the same
area in contact with each other. Telephone (757) 640-6300.
Commuter service --
Hampton Roads Regional Transit's Rideshare program offers a
vanpool commuting system for employees in both the public and
private sectors. Six to eight regular riders usually cooperate in
a vanpool. HOV Express bus service is also available from selected
Park & Ride locations. Discount monthly passes are available.

By air
Norfolk
International Airport, managed by the Norfolk Airport
Authority, is served by American, Delta, Continental, Northwest,
USAir, TWA and United Airlines. For schedules, call a travel agent

By rail
Amtrak, the nation's
passenger railroad service, serves Norfolk via bus connection to
the Newport News station. The bus leaves from a downtown motel
once daily at 6:20 a.m., Monday through Saturday, and returns at

By bus
The Greyhound / Trailways
Bus Line operates intercontinental bus service from a station at
701 Monticello Avenue, Norfolk. Telephone (757) 627-5641.
The Hampton Roads Regional Transit bus system offers local service
in Norfolk with connections to surrounding cities at convenient
direct transfer centers. Buses arrive at the centers every 30
minutes or hourly making connections between routes fast and easy.
Super Saver tickets are sold at TRT, 1500 Monticello Avenue, and
Farm Fresh supermarkets for 27 percent discounts off the cash bus

Handi-Ride and Maxi-Ride -- Hampton Roads
Regional Transit's Handi-Ride program provides lift-equipped
small vehicles with curb-to-curb service. Handi-Ride is for people
with disabilities. Certification and reservations are required.
Anyone can use Maxi-Ride. Maxi-Ride offers people another way to
connect with the direct transfer bus system. Same-day service can
be obtained by calling the Maxi-Ride driver directly via cellular

By ferry
The first ferry
leaves from Portsmouth at 7 a.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. on weekends
and operates on the half hour. Ferry service from Norfolk leaves
on the quarter hour. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the
ferry runs daily until 11:45 p.m. The rest of the year, service
ends at 10 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and midnight Friday and

- Take I-95 South to Richmond
- pick up I-64 East to Norfolk
- Drive through the Hampton Roads Tunnel
- Approximately 6 miles after leaving the tunnel, you will see a sign saying

- As you bear right there will be another sign

- Follow Terminal Blvd. until you reach Hampton Blvd. (the 3rd traffic light)
- Turn left onto Hampton Blvd.
- Drive down Hampton Blvd. to 43rd Street (the 9th traffic light)
- Turn right onto 43rd Street, the entrance to the University
- The Parking Garage will be on your right about 1/4 mile down 43rd Street. A parking pass must be obtained from Parking Services (located
on the ground floor of the parking garage) to park on campus. After you have a parking pass, you may
park in any of the properly
designated lots closest to the building you will be visiting.

South

- Take I-85 North or I-95 North to Route 58 East
- Follow Route 58 East through the Midtown Tunnel in Portsmouth
- Bear left out of the tunnel onto Hampton Blvd
- Follow Hampton Blvd. to 43rd Street (4 traffic lights, about 3 miles)
- Turn left onto 43rd Street, the entrance to the University
- The Parking Garage will be on your right about 1/4 mile down 43rd Street. A parking pass must be
obtained from Parking Services (located
on the ground floor of the parking garage) to park on campus. After you have a parking pass, you may
park in any of the properly
designated lots closest to the building you will be visiting.
